 Neighborhood Cafe

Matthew 25:35 - "For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me."

Every third Thursday night Mt. Vernon provides a free meal, fellowship and comfort to the surrounding community.  Taking place at Archdale United Methodist, everyone is welcome to stop in for a hot, fresh meal and encouragement.  Beginning at 5:30 we serve until 6:30.  It's an expression of Christ's respect and compassion for all people.

EPIC Odyssey Mission Camp

EPIC Odyssey Mission camp grew from the idea that "the mission field is between our own two feet" .  Each summer we host a week long camp for youth and adults that includes mission work in our community, daily worship experiences and fun! The camp is for youth from 7th through 12th grade.  Work projects during the week can include everything from yard work, to building a ramp to rebuilding a bathroom for people in our area.  EPIC is a truly inter-generational ministry that places youth and adults side by side as they share the love of Christ with others.  Applications for this week will be available at the end of March.  There is a $100 camp fee that helps cover the cost of food and materials that are used during the week. Scholarship monies are available as well.  Please contact Sally Voelkert at svoelkert@x9tech.com to request an application of if you have questions.  Dates for 2017 are Sunday, July 9- Friday morning, July 14.

We also have EPIC Weekends throughout the year to continue this outreach.  Many people who are unable to take off during the week to do a project are able to join us on a Saturday and experience the joy of serving the Lord in this way.  We hope to Embrace People In Christ every time we leave the doors of Mt. Vernon to serve others!

Good Neighbor Team through World Relief

World Relief is a local program that assists refugees with resettlement in the United States. Members of the Good Neighbor team walk beside a refugee family upon their arrival in our area. We assist with taking family members to doctor appointments, enrolling in school and learning about American culture...while we learn about theirs.  Our team has walked beside 2 families from Somolia over the past 3 years.  We have been blessed beyond measure to see our new friends become settled as valued neighbors in the community.

Gifts of Grace

The founders of Gifts of Grace Ministries, Inc., went on a WNCC VIM trip to Lithuania in 2003. The relationships established on that trip with the people of Birzai in north central Lithuania has continued until today. Those first trips transformed a Soviet recruitment center into Birzai Methodist Church. In 2011 the Gifts of Grace nonprofit was formed to involve multiple churches in our area to continue providing Christmas boxes, sponsorship for children, summer building team mission trips, and a partnership with Pagalbos Centras, a nonprofit providing assistance to the impoverished families in the Birzai region. Gifts of Grace has assisted in establishing 3 "help centers" and a bakery that provides after school and summer programs for children and families in 3 surrounding villages. Our long-term vision is to secure centers in other villages in the region.

  • Angel Tree
  • Operation Christmas Star
  • Communities In Schools

Look in the foyer of the church on the Sunday before Thanksgiving and you'll find our Angel Tree! You will find Angels that represent local children who are in need at Christmas.  Through this ministry we help out families in need by providing gifts for children.

Operation Christmas Star is a non-profit charity coordinated through Archdale Elementary School to provide meals for children and families who are in dire need of life's most basic requirements.  Your contributions provide urgently needed provisions for those have no other relief available. School is challenging enough for any child.  Imagine trying to concentrate on schoolwork or participate in activities when you're hungry and don't know where or when you'll find your next meal.

Together we coordinate food collection businesses and support the food drive that fills the shelves at C.O.A.T., the local food pantry.  The event wraps up with a benefit concert with the admission to the event being donations of food items.

Established in 1989, Communities In Schools of North Carolina is part of the national Communities In Schools network. Their mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. They work directly inside more than 300 public schools across the state, creating tailor-made plans for those students with the greatest risk of dropping out. We empower 1.5 million students nationally to stay in school and on the path to graduation each year.

Mt. Vernon supports CIS through the donation of school supplies, basic necessities, food, and our time and prayer to help the children receive the best education experience possible
